Description
WALK FOR BETTER NETWORK SERVICES — BE COUNTED AMONG TRUE AFRICAN THINKERS!
Zambians are usually very understanding and amicable. We are patient people, we adapt, endure, and we often find ways to make things work. One day of no network is understandable, even excusable. One week, maybe we can overlook. One month would be concerning, but six months? One year? That’s too much. That’s not an inconvenience anymore, it’s a national crisis.
This reality was made clear when the petition I recently put out lobbying for mobile number portability gathered over 10,000 verified signatures in less than a week, making it one of the biggest civic response movements in Zambia’s recent history. What does this show? That Zambians are finally standing up for themselves. That we are ready to demand better service, better systems, and better accountability.
We are tired of:
-Trying to call someone only for the phone to say “number invalid” when the number is perfectly valid.
-Missing out on job or business opportunities because callers are told “the number you have dialed is not reachable” , when in fact, it is.
-Being in an emergency and being unable to reach our emergency contacts because of the network.
So, what exactly is Mobile Number Portability (MNP)?
So, what exactly is Number Portability? It’s a system that allows users to retain ownership of their mobile numbers while changing service providers. It empowers consumers, breaks monopolies, and encourages competition. This is already working successfully in countries like South Africa, Tanzania, and almost the whole of Europe and America. Even where MTN originates (South Africa) and Airtel comes from (India), mobile number portability already exists. It’s time Zambia joined that list.
Why Mobile Number Portability Matters for Zambia
With MNP, we will be able to:
-Enjoy better service quality as network providers will be forced to compete for customers through improved service delivery.
-Ensure wider network access especially in rural areas, when one is posted or relocates to a new area because of employment or business, they will be able to tap into the network that is strongest there whilst still maintaining their number.
-Save money and maintain relationships because people won’t need to buy multiple SIM cards or lose contacts just to get better network access.
-Have peace of mind knowing that our phones are a reliable route that people can use to reach us.
Time to Act!
To amplify this message and ignite action among relevant stakeholders, we are embarking on a peaceful march, The Walk for Better Network Services to champion this cause and make our voices heard.
It’s not enough to complain. We must act!
We must take the first step that ignites change.
